Using Case Studies in Learning Bursts

Case studies are descriptions of a real life experience, related to the content in Learning Burst training, which are used to make points, raise issues or otherwise enhance the participants’ understanding and learning experience. The account usually follows a realistic scenario, such as a management or technical problem, from start to finish. Because they provide practical examples of problems and solutions, challenges and strategies, they support more theoretical material and often make the “lesson” more memorable and believable for the class.

Case studies used with Learning Bursts offer alternative experiences, approaches and solutions that will broaden the participants’ knowledge and skill. A best practice is to build the case in segments along with logical points of the Learning Burst segments. One key element in designing the case is to ensure that it provide realistic simulations of the kinds of real life experiences participants can expect when they practice for themselves – using real life case from the past company efforts is usually the best approach.

The Learning Burst approach to case studies is:

  • Introduce case
  • Show completed example
  • Students complete a case either individually or in teams

Success Stories

As a training provider at TACK-USA, I have seen all too often the missed opportunities when training is followed-up on ineffectively or not at all. Predictive Evaluation outlines a process that not only measures the effectiveness, but also includes strategies to ensure the skills are adopted and ROI is maximized. This is a how to book, not a high level concept. The practices outlined here are the best I have seen. They will be effective. The author got this exactly right.
